CLASS 1/2’s CIRCUS SKILLS WORKSHOP
FRIDAY 28th JANUARY 2011
As part of Year 1 and 2’s Circus topic this term, we invited ‘Doody’ the clown to come and hold a Circus Skills Workshop in school. The class had the opportunity to learn and practise a variety of different skills and activities including feather balancing, chinese ribbons, flowersticks, plate spinning, poi, stilt and tightrope walking.
Not only was it fun (and quite tricky) to learn these new skills, but we also ‘took a trip around the world’ learning about the history of each of the circus skills and the country they originated from.

“It was interesting to learn how to balance on the tightrope,
because I thought I wouldn’t be able to do it.”
Rosheen
“I liked it when Doody went on the unicycle because
I thought he might fall off!”
Ben
“I learned how to spin plates.”
Oliver
“I learned how to use the Pedal-Gos but I had to keep
practising until I got the hang of it. I kept falling off but
I kept trying until I did it!”
Shannon
“I liked doing the Circus Workshop because there were
lots of things to do and learn.”

WHITNASH PRIMARY SCHOOL READING INFORMATION EVENING
17th January 2011
Thank you to all the parents who took the time to join us for our Reading information evening, exploring how reading skills are taught in school and the best ways to help support your children at home.
Sharing books at home with your child is crucial in supporting their development as independent and confident readers and can have far reaching implications on their future success and well-being. It is just as important to read with your child in Year 6 as it is in Reception to help promote an enjoyment in reading. In Key Stage 2 it is vital to help practise their analytical and interpretive skills even though they may have learned the 'mechanics of reading'.
Attached is a copy of the presentation that was delivered on the night, as well as a booklet of 'Reading Questions' that parents might find useful to help give them suggestions for questions they could ask their children when reading with them.

WHITNASH PRIMARY SCHOOL PHONICS INFORMATION EVENING
18th October 2010
Thank you to all the parents who took the time to join us for our Phonics information evening, exploring how early reading and writing skills are taught in school and the best ways to help support your children at home. Being able to read is the most important skill children will learn during their early schooling and has far reaching implications for lifelong confidence and well-being.
Click on the links below for copies of the presentation and handout that were delivered on the night, as well as a video of how to correctly pronounce the phoneme sounds.

Green Day - 13th July
Today all the children took part in a themed 'Green Day' where lessons were based around being 'eco-friendly' and helping the children to learn more about the role they can play in looking after our environment. All week we are promoting walking to school to reduce carbon emissions and conjestion and today we took part in a whole host of activties.
We made mosaics reusing old and unwanted tiles, created a mucial orchestra from essentially 'old rubbish' supplied to us by WEAVE, sorted rubbish into different materials but also into what we can 'reduce, reuse and recycle', learned all about renewable and unrenewable energy sources, took a 'look around' our own environments to see what they are made up from and at the end of the day made our own pledges and promises about what we will do to be more environmentally friendly.
A look around

Whitnash Primary School's Summer Fete
On the 3rd July, we held a Summer Fete in the grounds of the school. We had a lovely day with good weather and there was plenty to see and do including face painting, lucky dips, a bouncy castle, tombolas and raffles and the ever popular 'Throw a wet sponge at a teacher' stall! Loads of you came along and we hope you had a great afternoon.
Thanks to the PTA, staff and parent helpers who helped set up and run the day and a HUGE thank you to Lucy Sweet (Chair of the PTA) for co-ordinating and overseeing the event. We will keep you posted on how much we managed to raise.
